Colombia
Safeguarding Colombia’s birds through reserves, research, and community engagement
Fundación ProAves was founded 25 years ago to save the Yellow-eared parrot and has since grown into Colombia’s leading national conservation organization. They protect over 12% of all bird species on the planet (1,337 species) across the country’s most biodiverse landscapes, from the Amazon and Andes to the Caribbean coast and Pacific mangroves. ProAves manages 28 nature reserves, conducts targeted research, implements science-based conservation strategies, and works closely with local and Indigenous communities to safeguard habitats and species while promoting sustainable livelihoods.
India
Protecting endangered species and India’s ancient forests through community-led forest restoration
Since 1995, the Applied Environmental Research Foundation (AERF) has been safeguarding the biodiversity of India’s northern Western Ghats, home to some of the country’s most ancient and ecologically rich forests. By combining science-based forest management with innovative incentive programs, AERF protects over 12,000 acres of privately owned forests and sacred groves, conserving endangered species, including the Lion-tailed macaque, Great hornbill, Indian leopard, and Indian ground pangolin. Working hand-in-hand with local communities, AERF ensures that both people and wildlife benefit, creating sustainable livelihoods while saving these critical habitats.
