Madagascar is home to over 100 species of lemurs—found nowhere else on Earth. But 98% are now threatened with extinction. Together, we can protect their forests, restore habitats, and ensure a future for these incredible primates.
Madagascar’s forests are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet—and lemurs are their beating heart. As seed dispersers and pollinators, lemurs help regenerate the very forests they depend on. But deforestation, hunting, and habitat loss are driving lemurs toward extinction, with 98% of species now threatened. Conservation Allies works with trusted local partners to protect these iconic primates across every habitat in Madagascar.
Trusted local partnerships: We work with on-the-ground conservation experts who best understand lemur behavior, threats, and habitats.
Highly efficient conservation: 100% of donations go directly to lemur conservation, making us one of the most effective lemur conservation organizations in the world.
Proven impact: Dozens of lemur species protected, forests preserved, and community engagement programs strengthened.
Give today and your gift will be matched by our Board, doubling your impact—every dollar goes directly to critical lemur conservation projects.
As some of the most effective conservation groups on the planet, our partners are critical guardians of lemurs and their natural habitats throughout Madagascar.
Lake Alaotra, Madagascar
Protecting the Critically Endangered Alaotran gentle lemur at Lake Alaotra
MWC leads conservation efforts in Madagascar’s largest wetland, Lake Alaotra, home to the Critically Endangered Alaotran gentle lemur—the only primate in the world living exclusively in wetlands. They restore marsh habitats, promote environmental education, and work with farmers and fishers to develop sustainable practices that protect both people’s livelihoods and the species’ survival.
Ankarafantsika National Park, Madagascar
Safeguarding 14 lemur species through local leadership
Ankarafantsika National Park is home to fourteen lemur species, including the Critically Endangered Coquerel’s sifaka, the Endangered Milne-Edwards’s sportive lemur, and the Vulnerable mongoose lemur. The Fosa Association, founded with support from Conservation Allies and led by local residents, conducts forest patrols, monitors lemur populations, and engages communities in proactive conservation efforts. Their initiatives reduce threats like wildfires and illegal logging, ensuring a safer future for these iconic species.
Additional Conservation Partners working to protect lemurs around the world include: Antrema Miray, ASITY Madagascar, Association Analasoa, Association Fanamby, Association Mitsinjo, Fikambanana Bongolava Maitso, Groupe d’Étude et de Recherche sur les Primates de Madagascar, IMPACT Madagascar, Lemur Conservation Foundation, Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership, Madagasikara Voakajy, and Ny Tanintsika.
