Protect Jamaica's Irreplaceable Blue and John Crow Mountains
Jamaica's Blue and John Crow Mountains hold some of the Caribbean's last cloud forest habitat, and the threats are mounting. If agricultural encroachment, storm damage, and invasive species are not more actively addressed, species found nowhere else on Earth face irreversible loss. Donations will help JCDT expand ranger patrols, restore habitat, and protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Challenges
The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park protects one of Jamaica’s most irreplaceable landscapes. The island is recognized globally for its exceptionally high levels of endemism, and the Park’s tropical montane and cloud forests provide critical habitat for species found nowhere else on Earth—including the Critically Endangered Jamaican peak frog, the Endangered Jamaican blackbird, and the Endangered Homerus swallowtail, the largest butterfly in the Western Hemisphere. Recognized internationally as a Key Biodiversity Area, the Park’s forests also protect the watersheds that communities across eastern Jamaica depend on, and its mountains hold deep cultural significance as the historic refuge of the Windward Maroons—values that together led to the Park’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
These globally significant values face mounting threats. Agricultural expansion and illegal clearing are steadily eroding montane and cloud forest habitat, while increasingly severe hurricanes, landslides, and wildfires damage fragile ecosystems that take decades to recover. Invasive species compound the pressure on endemic and range-restricted plants and animals that have nowhere else to retreat. The loss of this habitat would mean the irreversible loss of species found only in this one Jamaican mountain range—and the weakening of watersheds and cultural landscapes that Jamaicans have relied on for generations.
Urgent Solutions
JCDT is building a model in which conservation, community livelihoods, research, and sustainable tourism reinforce one another—reducing pressure on the Park while generating the resources needed for its long-term protection. Donations to this appeal will directly support:
- Ranger patrols, reforestation, and restoration of hurricane-damaged and degraded habitat
- Junior Ranger and ecotourism training programs that create conservation-linked livelihoods for young people in communities around the Park
- Direct engagement with farmers and forest users to prevent agricultural encroachment and adopt sustainable land practices
- Research facilities and field stations supporting long-term biodiversity monitoring and climate studies
- Sustainable ecotourism infrastructure that reduces JCDT’s dependence on grants over time
Why Your Donation Matters
For nearly four decades, JCDT has worked to protect the Blue and John Crow Mountains, safeguarding more than 100,000 acres of globally important forest, watershed, and habitat for species found nowhere else on Earth. But government funding covers only a portion of the true cost of managing the Park, and that gap is where your donation goes to work.
Your support puts rangers in the field to respond to encroachment and other threats, restores hurricane-damaged habitat, and strengthens the biodiversity research and monitoring that guides the Park’s management. It also helps JCDT work directly with farmers and forest users to reduce pressure on the land, and expand the Junior Ranger and ecotourism programs that create conservation-linked livelihoods for surrounding communities.
Through Conservation Allies, 100% of every donation goes directly to JCDT’s programs. After nearly 40 years of protection, the progress already made on this UNESCO World Heritage Site cannot be taken for granted—and your gift helps ensure it isn’t lost.
