Critical Land Acquisition Program
Securing critical habitats for the world's most endangered species
Some of the most urgent conservation opportunities come down to a single decision: whether a parcel of critical habitat can be purchased and permanently protected before it is lost. The Critical Land Acquisition Program (CLAP) was built to put funding into the hands of conservation partners who identify these opportunities on the ground—so that habitat for Endangered species can be secured while the window is still open.
Our Priorities
Endangered Species Habitat
Properties essential to IUCN Critically Endangered or Endangered species, and recognized Species Rarity Sites.
Reserve Connectivity
Parcels that link, buffer, or extend existing Protected Areas to strengthen ecological integrity and create room for species to move and adapt.
Leveraged Funding
Projects with co-financing from other donors or matching commitments that multiply the impact of each dollar.
Eligibility
- IUCN Member organization (or actively applied for membership)
- Land with required legal documentation ready for acquisition
- Located within a Species Rarity Site or connecting to an existing Protected Area
- 100% of grant funds allocated to direct land acquisition and designation costs
“Protecting a critical parcel of habitat is one of the most durable conservation investments we can make—every acre secured today is a long-lasting victory for biodiversity.”
— Dr. Caitlin Eschmann, Executive Director of Conservation Allies
Application Process
We have a straightforward application process and we then follow-up with any specific questions. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis—we encourage interested parties to apply as soon as a strategic acquisition opportunity emerges.
