Madagascar Protected Area Outlook 2024
Madagascar, home to extraordinary biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth, faces a critical conservation crisis. Today, less than 10% of its original primary forest cover remains, and projections indicate that over half of the remaining forests in Protected Areas could be lost by 2026. Forest cover loss, a key measure of ecological threats and management effectiveness, has been analyzed across 109 terrestrial Protected Areas from 2001 to 2023. This first-of-its-kind report highlights urgent priorities for preserving Madagascar’s natural heritage and addressing global biodiversity and climate goals.
Developed by Madagascar’s leading conservation organizations in collaboration with Conservation Allies Malagasy team members, the full report is available below, offering detailed insights and strategies we are leading to address these challenges.
