Conservation Officer for Southwest Madagascar

Position Overview:
Conservation Allies is seeking an experienced Conservation Officer to join our team to help manage a portfolio of Protected Area projects in southwest Madagascar, based in Toliara. This position will involve working across a dozen or more Protected Areas, focusing on supporting the Protected Area manager (CA partner), monitoring fires and deforestation rates, and providing capacity training. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Protected Area management and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The individual is expected to work from home and undertake a minimum of 17 days in the field per month visiting, reviewing, and assisting Protected Areas. The position will report directly to the Madagascar Conservation Manager and work closely with the CA team.
Location: Based in Toliara, Southwest Madagascar with significant (average 17 days) regional travel required each month.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish a strong working relationship with partners working within the following PAs:
- PK 32 Ranobe
- Tsimanampesotse National Park
- Mangoky-Ihotry Complex
- Tsinjoriake Protected Area
- Mikea National Park
- Analevelona Sacred Forest
- Andohahela National Park
- Additional sites as needed
- Monitor the progress of CA Protected Area Grants by:
- Daily tracking of fires and deforestation through Global Forest Watch.
- Undertaking at least 17 days a month in the field visiting projects.
- Providing advice, technical assistance, training, and support to partners on PA management, drone use, fire management techniques, and various monitoring tools (SMART, GFW, iNaturalist).
- Provide monthly updates with details of activities completed that month.
- Provide at least two short (300-600 word) articles or stories per month for publication.
- Liaise with other local conservation entities and authorities to help advance the projects.
- Regularly communicate with Conservation Allies team members to ensure alignment on goals, progress, and challenges.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Conservation, or other relevant fields. Master’s or doctorate degree is a bonus but not essential.
- Required Experience:
- 5+ years of related conservation and/or protected area management experience.
- Examples of positive impacts and reducing deforestation for PAs.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Skills (a bonus but not essential):
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently in remote and challenging environments.
- Proficiency in the use of drones for environmental monitoring.
- Passion for conservation and environmental issues in Madagascar.
Compensation:
Salary is competitive and will commensurate with experience. In addition to the monthly salary, per diem will be provided while in the field.
