Antrema Miray

About AMI

Antrema Miray (AMI) is a non-profit association, governed by law 60 – 133 of the Malagasy Republic, regrouping the Sakalava communities of the Katsepy peninsula. AMI co-manages the Biocultural Site of Antrema, which is a category VI /IUCN Protected Area, with the National Museum of Natural History of Paris.

AMI at a glance

AMI was created in 2000 at the initiative of Prince Tsimanendry, Guardian of the Traditions. Under this initiative, lemurs are considered crowned prophets and are the incarnation of their ancestors. Therefore, lemurs are taboo (fady) and not to be touched.

AMI was formalized in 2016 and includes local communities from 12 different associations focusing on aspects of social, conservation, cultural, and community development.

Our Work

The AMI Association, which has become a Platform of Associations, works in the conservation of the environment, the development of different economic sectors, social support, schooling, maintaining traditions, and managing local conflict.
