The Challenge
Human migration into the forest which triggers deforestation and fragmentation of the remaining forest ‘corridor’ particularly through agricultural extension (rice-farming in the valley floors and gradual deforesting of the surrounding hillsides). Illegal logging and mining activities, fuelled by corruption. Hunting of lemurs for consumption. Data on forest cover loss from 2001 to 2020, COFAV lost 51,700 ha of forest cover including 37,700 ha of primary forest cover. The main threat to fauna is habitat destruction and collection of animals for sale. The Lemur Conservation Strategy lists the COFAV as being home to 21 lemur taxa of which 6 are critically endangered, 7 endangered, 4 vulnerable, 1 near threatened and 3 data deficient. COFAV has the highest number of lemur species of any protected area in Madagascar – of which a disproportionate number are in elevated threat categories.
Urgent Solutions
Why your donation matters
Apart from the wealth of flora and fauna biodiversity which will disappear as the degradation of the forest continues and due to the damage of this corridor, the impact of climate change is already visible, which has caused hunger for the people who live around the forest at the moment. As for the rate of forest degradation, there will be no more forests in about 70 years. Because of this, many natural resources will be lost, there will be no more rain and many rivers will dry up in the south and southeast of Madagascar. The genetic diversity that exists in this corridor, such as the species of pigs, birds and the valuable trees in this forest, has also been lost. If deforestation continues in this part of the forest, the Forest Corridor will disappear after a few decades.Climate change will persist and the consequences will be disastrous. Biodiversity will disappear forever,This part of the forest is the source of several rivers in the south and southeast of Madagascar, and if this will lead to drought and famine.
